One of Bird Year's goals was to raise money for bird conservation. We raised more than $24,000 for conservation from Central America to the Arctic.

We have suspended our official fundraising efforts—but we encourage you to keep giving! Birds and their habitat need all of the support they can get.

Please support the conservation project of your choice…and contact us to let us know. If you'd like to donate to help protect the Boreal Forest, please click the loon to the right. Contributions are tax-deductible in either Canada or the US.

Here are the projects we supported through your kind donations:

1) The Arctic

Funds were donated to Audubon's Arctic programs as well as grass-roots work to permanently protect the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. The Arctic Refuge is known as “America’s Serengeti.” More than 190 bird species nest or visit the Refuge – migrants travel though every US state and to five different continents.

2) Central America

Funds were contributed to SalvaNATURA’s migratory bird conservation program in El Salvador. This program includes permanent monitoring (bird-banding) stations and environmental education in three national parks, shorebird monitoring at the Jaltepeque-Jiquilisco Biosphere Reserve, and land purchase in the El Imposible National Park-Barra de Santiago biological corridor.

3) Continental USA

A) Southwest: We supported efforts to protect Otero Mesa (home to more than 250 bird species).

B) Gulf Coast: We raised substantial funds for the habitat protection projects of the Dauphin Island Bird Sanctuaries . Dauphin Island has precious forests which are a critical refuelling stop for songbirds, exhausted after crossing the Gulf of Mexico.

4) Canada

In Canada funds are helping to protect the boreal forest. The Boreal Forest is the nesting ground of more than 300 bird species — but is threatened by industrial development.

If you have questions about our fundraising, or would like to direct your contribution to the specific project of your choice, please contact us.

The current “Big Year” record is 745 bird species – Malkolm identified 548 species during our fossil-fuel-free Bird Year. We traveled 13,133 miles (21,144 kilometers) without using fossil-fuels. We traveled largely by bicycle, but also by boots and boats.

Special thanks to the New Mexico Wilderness Alliance which kindly managed our US fundraising efforts!
